The Trees at the Promenade Museum
The Tree Of Heaven
Despite its name, this tree is of Chinese origin. Characterised by its smooth trunk and the somewhat unpleasant smell of its crumpled leaves.
It spreads easily and grows rapidly, although these trees rarely exceed 50 years of age.
It was introduced as an ornamental tree and as a host for moths (ailanthe bombyx) for silk production but without success. However, it quickly became naturalised and is now considered an invasive species.
